CT Feedback

 What specific feedback have I asked my CT for in my teaching?

I have asked both my CT and the school's other band director, Mr. Nagel, about what I can do to make their jobs easier while I am here. So far, I have helped with loading and unloading equipment for the marching band, organized the band library, sorted our new uniform tops, and I've helped keep a spreadsheet of the NEIBA (Northeastern Iowa Bandmaster's Association) pieces that are for sale, as my CT is in charge of storing that library and keeping track of what is sold and what we still have. I am also going to be helping my CT with labeling folders for the NEIBA honor band that happens in December. Students get selected for this honor band shortly after marching band season wraps up, so I will also have to stuff music in folders and make sure these have what they need in them. I think students who are selected will be confirmed after I am done at Washington, but I am just glad I can do something to help out my CT.

For general feedback, my CT has told me that I am doing a great job on making connections with students, as I am always open to talking with students and getting to know them better. They are excited to see what the next weeks have in store for me, especially with starting lessons here soon.

I have also asked about what I would be able to do for teaching, as there isn't a ton of room for me to fully teach a lesson since we are in marching band season. We will be starting lessons with our students who are auditioning for all-state here soon, which will be a great opportunity for me to hear the material they are preparing for their audition. While teaching lessons, I will ask for feedback on what went well/what needs improvement from my CT. This will also be a good way for me to learn how to help advanced students with their repertoire. Even though their audition day will be after I'm done at my high school placement, my CT invited me to come along with them so I can see the audition process from a director's perspective. This will definitely be weird to go back to the audition site as a director because I have only gone to these as a student!

    It is great that your CT has invited you to see the audition process, as I feel that will be a great experience from a director point of view. It seems you are doing awesome at making sure your CT knows you want to help and be involved as much as you can be.

Diverse Learners

  What have you noticed about your students you are working with each day? I have noticed that I have so many different personalities in the band. There are definitely students who are more outgoing than others. I have some students who will spend a lot of their open blocks in my office hanging out with me, but there are some that I have not had a conversation with yet. I know some students are still getting used to me being at their rehearsals all the time, which I expected during my time here. I have gotten to make some great connections with students so far. Staff Development

  How have you been involved with staff development? If not, what professional area would you like to learn more about in this placement? At Washington, I attended all-staff meetings and I would join in on the music department PLC meetings. Because of how involved the marching band was, I would also join them at football games, competitions, and other performances. This gave me a good insight of what a season would look like if I were to get a high school band job in the future. I've also become good friends with some of the other staff members in Washington's band, so I enjoy going to these to hang out with these people as well! At my general music placement, I have been attending all meetings that my CT is attending, which we usually have on Wednesdays. We have these meetings at both Vernon and Longfellow, where we address any student behavior concerns and what we can do to help them get them on the right path. Comfort Zones

  Where are you naturally drawn in your placement? I am naturally drawn to some of the students who are more outgoing in my placement, as they kind of balance out the fact that I am somewhat introverted. During some prep times or when I am working on stuff in my office (Yes, I get an office!), some students will come in and talk to me. I really do love when they come in because it helps me get to know students better. I am also more drawn to the woodwind sections while assisting with rehearsals because that is what I know more about. I know exactly what to do when a student is having problems with something on their instrument. Where will you need to be more purposeful? I feel like I need to be more purposeful with my sections that I know the least about, which would be color guard and percussion.
