Diverse Learners

What have you noticed about your students you are working with each day?

I have noticed that I have so many different personalities in the band. There are definitely students who are more outgoing than others. I have some students who will spend a lot of their open blocks in my office hanging out with me, but there are some that I have not had a conversation with yet. I know some students are still getting used to me being at their rehearsals all the time, which I expected during my time here.

I have gotten to make some great connections with students so far. One I have connected with the most is a baritone player in the marching band and she spends a majority of her time down in the music wing. Almost every day I expect her to pop into my office at least sometime because of how much she has done it. She only does this during her open blocks and during music workshop though, so it's not like she's skipping class or anything. She reminds me of a younger version of me, which I think is pretty cool to see.

I am hoping to get to some more students a little better, cause as I stated before, there are still some students who I haven't gotten to talk to yet. One issue with that is that I have so many students in the marching band, so getting to every single person might be hard, especially the students who are shy and closed off. I'm going to get a better grasp on all of the different personalities in the band and see if I can get to know a handful of students better throughout the rest of my time at Washington.

  1. It's important to make a goal to reach two new students every x days. You will have to decide how many days that will be but it is important to practice that habit. You might be surprised how important it might be to reach out to those students. Try it and see!

  2. It is great that you recognize specific students that you may need to set goals to interact with. It can be difficult with students that are more shy but recognizing that and taking the initiative will be helpful to grow a connection with them.

  3. Some things just take time, Im sure the connections will continue to form as time goes on!
