Teaching Interests

 What type/size of school are you interested in applying to for next year?

I'm going to be honest, I am not entirely sure of what size school I want to apply to for next year. I know for a fact that I want to do high school band. I've enjoyed my experience in the elementary music world, but I'm slowly figuring out that it might not be the exact thing that I want. I have enjoyed my experiences at the urban/suburban area schools, but it might also be nice to teach at a rural high school. I would consider teaching at a rural high school because I am familiar with the environment of one, as that was the type of high school I went to as a student.

In the spring, I still have a whole semester left at Coe, but I've been looking at job boards to see what's out there. I just applied for a job as a show choir band director for Prairie because I could fit it in my schedule easily. I also have considered subbing here and there during the spring to get some experience under my belt.

I am hopefully staying in the Eastern Iowa area, but if there's a position elsewhere that would be a good fit for me, things might change. I'm just going to see where life takes me!

    I love that you are applying for jobs now. You will be surprised how much it will help you to gain the expereince each time you apply. Also, you are very ready to accept something like the show choir band director. I am proud of you.

    rural high schools are so fun to be in and working in one sounds like it would be so fun also! I feel like i'm in a similar boat there but no idea at this point!

Diverse Learners

  What have you noticed about your students you are working with each day? I have noticed that I have so many different personalities in the band. There are definitely students who are more outgoing than others. I have some students who will spend a lot of their open blocks in my office hanging out with me, but there are some that I have not had a conversation with yet. I know some students are still getting used to me being at their rehearsals all the time, which I expected during my time here. I have gotten to make some great connections with students so far. One I have connected with the most is a baritone player in the marching band and she spends a majority of her time down in the music wing. Staff Development

  How have you been involved with staff development? If not, what professional area would you like to learn more about in this placement? At Washington, I attended all-staff meetings and I would join in on the music department PLC meetings. Because of how involved the marching band was, I would also join them at football games, competitions, and other performances. This gave me a good insight of what a season would look like if I were to get a high school band job in the future. I've also become good friends with some of the other staff members in Washington's band, so I enjoy going to these to hang out with these people as well! At my general music placement, I have been attending all meetings that my CT is attending, which we usually have on Wednesdays. We have these meetings at both Vernon and Longfellow, where we address any student behavior concerns and what we can do to help them get them on the right path. Comfort Zones

  Where are you naturally drawn in your placement? I am naturally drawn to some of the students who are more outgoing in my placement, as they kind of balance out the fact that I am somewhat introverted. During some prep times or when I am working on stuff in my office (Yes, I get an office!), some students will come in and talk to me. I really do love when they come in because it helps me get to know students better. I am also more drawn to the woodwind sections while assisting with rehearsals because that is what I know more about. I know exactly what to do when a student is having problems with something on their instrument. Where will you need to be more purposeful? I feel like I need to be more purposeful with my sections that I know the least about, which would be color guard and percussion.
